DVD The First Eleven
The first Australian cricket tour of England – 1868
This is the story of the first Australian cricket team to tour England.
Descendants of both team and management recall memories of the tour handed down by their families. Historians John Mulvaney and Rex Harcourt share fascinating details of a remarkable and little told story from our shared history as a nation.
Former Test Player Ashley Mallett brings cricket perspectives to the story and he is joined by John McGure, captain of the Australian Aboriginal side which toured England in 1988.
We follow the 1868 team from it’s first development in far Western Victoria, through its forays afield to Melbourne and Sydney. We see the team over come initial misfortune and go on to become the first international cricket team to tour England, performing with great distinction against a wide range of opponents and comparing creditability with other national teams on their first tours of England.
We get to know the personalities of the tour, our first international cricketing stars, Dick-a-Dick, Mullagh and Cuzens. We glimpse the many facets of English cricket and society and then watch the team return home to find a world changed forever with the establishment of Aboriginal missions and reserves.
